EUROPARC 2017 – Registrations are open!

The EUROPARC Conference 2017 will address the concerns of sustainable tourism and the registration can be made, from today, on the website of the event, taking place, from the 6th to 10thSeptember, in Portugal, in the Magic Mountains territory.

The EUROPARC Conference is an European event with an international focus, that brings together various experts on the issues related with the nature conservation and the cultural heritage as well as the sustainable management of all the activities within protected and classified areas. This year, and for the first time, the event takes place in Portugal, in a geographical area of enormous environmental and cultural value, composed by Arouca, Castelo de Paiva, Castro Daire, Cinfães, S. Pedro do Sul, Sever do Vouga and Vale de Cambra.

Is foreseen the participation of more than three hundred people, that can consult all the information of the program and to the registration form in http://europarc2017.montanhasmagicas.pt.

The theme of the EUROPARC Conference 2017 – “New Voices, New Visions, New Values for People and Nature in Europe” – will focus the debate on the role of protected areas as a model territories of the socially inclusive, environmentally healthy and economically fair development for all. The EUROPARC Conference 2017 is thus framed in the concerns of the United Nations which declared this year as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for the Development.

Dominique Leveque

DOMINIQUE LEVEQUE

Dominique Leveque is the Mayor of the Municipality AŸ-Champagne (France), Councillor of the Department Marne and President of the Nature Regional Park Montagne de Reims. He has long experience of bridging parks and politics in his role as Mayor and Park President. Dominique is also President of the International commission of the Fédérations des Parcs Naturels Régionaux de France (France Nature Regional Parks) and Council member of EUROPARC Federation.

Created in 1976, the Nature Regional Park Montagne de Reims, is 54.000ha and has 35.000 habitants. Dominique recently led the park to the UNESCO world heritage list by the inscription of “Coteaux, Maisons et Caves de Champagne”. 

 He will help the Conference understand the complex and sometimes conflicting responsibilities faced by a Mayor and Park President.

ERIKA STANCIU

Erika Stanciu was recently State Secretary of Forests and, for a short time State Secretary for Biodiversity Conservation and Protected Areas in the Ministry of Environment, Water and Forests in Romania. Previous President of EUROPARC Federation and holder of the Alfred Toepfer Medal for outstanding contribution to the work of protected areas in Europe.

From the forest of Retezat to the forest of flipcharts that populate many of Erika’s training workshops, Erika plays a key role in capacity development of Protected Area Professionals in Romania. She was involved in the creation of ProPark - Foundation for Protected Areas, where she is currently the Executive Director. Erika will offer some insights and thoughts on joint voices for old and new values in nature conservation.

MONSIGNOR FRANCISCO FROJÁN MADERO

Francisco Froján Madero, Monsignor, born in Galicia (Spain), is a biologist (graduated in 1976) who has later done his religious education with a bachelor concluded in 1985 and a PhD in Theology (1998). Since 2000, Francisco lives in the Vatican State and works in the State Secretary for external relations.

His passion for nature has made him establish a strong relation with the environmental subjects, having an active role in bridging spiritual values with nature conservation by participating in several international conferences.

We will have the privilege to hear the integrated vision and reflections of a man of science and faith about the Papal Encyclical LAUDATO SI’: On Care For Our Common Home.

Marina Silva Vaz de Lima

MARINA SILVA VAZ DE LIMA

Marina Silva is a Brazilian politician and was environmental minister in 2003-2008 in Lula’s Government and during her mandate 25 million hectares of new National Parks have been created in the Brazil network and more than 12 million young people participated in environmental actions all over the country. Silva was a colleague of Chico Mendes, who was assassinated for defending the Amazon from massive deforestation. She

In 1996, Silva won the Goldman Environmental Prize for South & Central America. In 2007, the United Nations Environment Program named her one of the Champions of the Earth and won the 2009 Sophie Prize. In 2010, she was named by Foreign Policy magazine to its list of top global thinkers, for taking Green mainstream. In December 2014, Marina Silva was elected by the British Financial Times newspaper as one of its Women of the Year. Marina only went to school when she was 16 years old but she graduated in History and then with post graduation in psychoanalytic theory and psycopedagogy.

16 – PERI-URBAN PARKS, NATURE SO CLOSE TO US

Location: Network of peri-urban parks of Vila Nova de Gaia

Vila Nova de Gaia is a municipality with about 300 thousand inhabitants, with a population density of almost 1.800 hab/ km2, being the third most populous of the country.

Since early, the issue of nature and leisure was a priority of the municipality that created, in 1983, the Biological Park of Gaia, symbol of all work in favour of environmental education followed by the declaration of successive spaces with natural values on the banks and at the mouth of the Douro river, and still in the dune cordon of the coast.

The visit dedicated to the theme of the periurban parks will begin with the Biological Park of Gaia where the whole network of peri-urban natural spaces will be known and the specific problem of spaces of this nature, followed by a visit to the facilities and spaces of the park. After lunch, we will visit some of the other natural spaces of the network.

Location: Paiva Valley, Arouca

The Paiva river has a high diversity of species, habitats and ecosystems, some of which are considered to be priority at the European level.

In this visit, to be realized through a water walk, you will have the opportunity to know one of the most interesting sections of the Paiva river, with the peculiarity of walking along its bed and its banks. You will be able to know its extraordinary biodiversity in greater detail, as well as the actions and projects that have been developed by SOS Paiva River – Paiva Valley Defense Association, with a view to their protection and conservation.

After this walk you can still test your acumen, in performing maneuvers with ropes, in a set of activities that are expected to be carried out along the “Ponte de Alvarenga” (Alvarenga bridge), over the Paiva river.

14 – LEVADAS OF THE MAGIC MOUNTAINS, A NEW BET FOR LOCAL TOURISM

Location: Caima valley, Vale de Cambra

Although practically unexplored in mainland Portugal, levadas are an important resource in the context of the offer of nature tourism, combining the pleasure of walking, the contemplation of the landscape and the interpretation of the surrounding natural, cultural and rural heritage.

The great abundance of rivers and streams that cross the Magic Mountains, coupled with the strong agricultural tradition of the territory, gave rise to the construction of countless levadas (irrigation channles), with the function of driving water from the rivers and streams to the mills and agricultural fields.

Through this visit you will have the opportunity to get to know “Levada de Santa Cruz”, on the banks of the Caima river, in Vale de Cambra, as well as the tourist valorisation project of the Burgães channels, an initiative of the local authority to increase the tourist activity in the county. During the visit you will have the opportunity to perform a "baptism" of Stand up Padle.

13 – DISCOVERING THE WATER AND STONE ROUTE OF THE MAGIC MOUNTAINS

Location: Freita and Arada mountains and Caima and Teixeira valleys, S. Pedro do Sul, Arouca e Vale de Cambra

Level of difficulty (physical requirement): Medium

If there are natural elements that stand out in the landscapes of the Magic Mountains, besides the mountains themselves, they are the water and the stone, forming the base of some of the most emblematic places to visit in this territory: waterfalls, reservoirs, wells, villages, sidewalks, Paths and walls, bridges, mills, among others.

In order to promote this priceless heritage, ADRIMAG put forward the creation of a nature route, called "Water and Stone Route", which promotes the visitation, interpretation and valorisation of these spaces, distributed by the seven municipalities of the Magic Mountains.

This visit proposes the discovery of some points of the route, with the interpretation always enriching and enthusiastic of one of those responsible for its creation, the biologist Paulo Pereira.

12 – VOUGA VALLEY – BOOSTING TOURISM BY VALUING THE HERITAGE

Location: Vouga valley, Sever do Vouga

Occupied by man since the immemorial time, the Municipality of Sever do Vouga is located in the heart of the Vouga valley. It is a Site of Community Importance of the Natura 2000 Network and has distinctive natural characteristics, historical and cultural heritage and a unique desire for the production of small fruits, especially blueberry.

The Vouga river and its magnificent valley have an exceptional conditions for practicing multiple nature tourism activities. In this visit we propose you a closer contact with the river and its natural and historical-cultural surroundings, by walking on foot, through the ecopist of Sever do Vouga, climbing activity in the bridge of Poço de Santiago and a visit to the experimental field of the small red fruits and discover the origins of the blueberry production in Sever do Vouga and, finally, visit the Cabrea waterfall.

During the visit you will also have the opportunity to appreciate the beautiful landscapes, as well as the actions of valorization of the historical-cultural heritage that the Municipality of Sever do Vouga has been developing, namely the transformation of the emblematic ex-railway line of the Vouga and the use of the built railway heritage for the dynamization of economic activities.
