In 2017 the EUROPARC Federation Annual Conference takes place in the Magic Mountains territory, located in the Center/North of mainland Portugal.

With an area of 1.689 km2, the Magic Mountains cover the extensive Gralheira and Montemuro massifs, located between the Douro and Vouga rivers, including the geographical area of the municipalities of Arouca, Castelo de Paiva, Castro Daire, Cinfães, S. Pedro do Sul, Sever do Vouga and Vale de Cambra.

Magic Mountains, why?

Territory of exceptional natural values, certified as a sustainable tourist destination, since November 2013, under the European Charter of Sustainable Tourism in protected and classified areas, the Magic Mountains include four Sites of Community Importance (SCI) Natura 2000 Network and a Geopark of UNESCO, guided by an offer of a responsible and sustainable tourism model focused on ecotourism, geotourism and active tourism.

The uniqueness of the geological phenomena that occur here, the remarkable biodiversity features and the characteristics of its geomorphology make Magic Mountains an excellent destination for nature’s observation and interpretation and for the practice of numerous sports and adventure activities, among which stand out the rafting, kayaking, canoeing, cannoning, hiking and mountain biking.

Occupied since prehistoric times, archaeological remains and monuments throughout the territory witness its long history: enigmatic petroglyphs of Atlantic art, megalithic monuments, bridges and roman roads, medieval monasteries and temples, different types of shrines and churches, typical villages of schist and granite, historic mines and much more.

The EUROPARC Conference in the Magic Mountains is in line with the objectives defined by ADRIMAG and its local and regional partners in the development of a strategy focused on tourism and economic valuation of its natural and cultural resources, based on the principles of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in protected and classified areas, awarded by EUROPARC Federation.
